Learning to Map into a Universal POS Tagset

چکیده
We present an automatic method for mapping language-specific part-of-speech tags to a set of universal tags. This unified representation plays a crucial role in cross-lingual syntactic transfer of multilingual dependency parsers. Until now, however, such conversion schemes have been created manually. Our central hypothesis is that a valid mapping yields POS annotations with coherent linguistic properties which are consistent across source and target languages. We encode this intuition in an objective function that captures a range of distributional and typological characteristics of the derived mapping. Given the exponential size of the mapping space, we propose a novel method for optimizing over soft mappings, and use entropy regularization to drive those towards hard mappings. Our results demonstrate that automatically induced mappings rival the quality of their manually designed counterparts when evaluated in the context of multilingual parsing.1

POS Tagger and Chunker for Tamil Language
This paper presents the Part Of Speech tagger and Chunker for Tamil using Machine learning techniques. Part Of Speech tagging and chunking are the fundamental processing steps for any language processing task. Part of speech (POS) tagging is the process of labeling automatic annotation of syntactic categories for each word in a corpus. Chunking is the task of identifying and segmenting the text...
متن کاملA Common Parts-of-Speech Tagset Framework for Indian Languages
We present a universal Parts-of-Speech (POS) tagset framework covering most of the Indian languages (ILs) following the hierarchical and decomposable tagset schema. In spite of significant number of speakers, there is no workable POS tagset and tagger for most ILs, which serve as fundamental building blocks for NLP research. Existing IL POS tagsets are often designed for a specific language; th...
متن کاملPOS tagset design for Italian
We aim to automatically induce a PoS tagset for Italian by analysing the distributional behaviour of Italian words. To this end, we propose an algorithm that (a) extracts information from loosely labelled dependency structures that encode only basic and broadly accepted syntactic relations, namely Head/Dependent and the distinction of dependents into Argument vs. Adjunct, and (b) derives a poss...

This paper presents the first part-of-speech (POS) tagging research for Tigrinya (Semitic language) from the newly constructed Nagaoka Tigrinya Corpus. The raw text was extracted from a newspaper published in Eritrea in the Tigrinya language. This initial corpus was cleaned and formatted in plaintext and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) XML format. A tagset of 73 tags was designed, and the co...
متن کاملThe CLE Urdu POS Tagset
The paper presents a design schema and details of a new Urdu POS tagset. This tagset is designed due to challenges encountered in working with existing tagsets for Urdu. It uses tags that judiciously incorporate information about special morpho-syntactic categories found in Urdu. With respect to the overall naming schema and the basic divisions, the tagset draws on the Penn Treebank and a Commo...
